Let's whip that brand into shape!

If you’ve been here for a while, you know we don’t just talk about pretty spaces. We talk about intentional brands, smart systems, and guest experiences that actually move the needle.
And today, we’re diving into a question that keeps coming up on consultation calls:
When exactly should you hire a brand designer when starting a short-term rental?
Spoiler alert:
It’s probably earlier than you think.
When you close on a property, the instinct is to jump straight into interior design.
It feels productive.
It’s tangible.
You can see the progress.
But what if the timeline is backward?
What if your brand strategist should come before your interior designer?
Let’s break it down.
When people hear “branding,” they immediately think:
Yes — those things are part of branding.
But they are not the foundation.
The foundation is brand strategy.
Brand strategy answers:
Think of it like building a house.
You wouldn’t frame the walls without pouring the foundation first.
Your visual brand (logos, colors, design) sits on top of strategy.
No strategy = unstable structure.
Interior Design Executes It.
They absolutely go hand in hand.
But brand strategy must come first because it informs:
Without that clarity, you’re designing blindly.
Yes, some interior designers do market research — and some do it well.
But a brand strategist looks at it differently.
I’m studying:
For example:
In Nashville, the bachelorette market is saturated.
If you decide to target bachelorettes, we need differentiation.
If you decide to serve couples instead, that’s a completely different design direction, messaging strategy, and guest experience.
And that clarity happens before furniture is ever selected.
This is where most hosts skim the surface.
We don’t just say:
“Families.”
We define:
A digital nomad’s needs look very different from:
And every one of those decisions impacts:
This is not surface-level work.
Before we select:
We define:
What does arrival feel like?
Is it:
☕ Slow mornings and coffee rituals?
🎉 Champagne and celebration from the second they walk in?
💻 Quiet productivity and extended stays?
🌊 Rest and relaxation?
We define the emotional experience first.
Then interior design executes it.
This one surprises people.
About 65% of my brand clients come to me without a name.
Or they come with a sentimental name that hasn’t been strategically considered.
And here’s why it matters:
With the rise of direct booking and savvy travelers, your property name becomes a breadcrumb.
If it’s memorable, guests can:
The name feeds into:
Branding is about familiarity.
Familiarity builds trust.
Trust drives bookings and referrals.
Color palettes are powerful.
They evoke emotion.
They trigger memory.
They influence perception.
And beyond that, they must:
Interior designers choose colors beautifully.
Brand designers choose colors strategically.
And ideally? They work together.
Here’s the practical blueprint.
My brand strategy + design timeline is about 4 weeks total.
You’ll receive:
Two weeks in, you’ll already have enough finalized to hand off to your interior designer.
After due diligence.
Not before.
Why?
Because if something falls through and you back out of the contract, you don’t want to lose your deposit on branding services.
If you’re in a 30-day close:
This condenses your launch timeline significantly.
Let me tell you a story.
In 2019, we accidentally got into short-term rentals.
We furnished mostly with:
And we ran 80–85% occupancy.
Would that work today?
Probably not.
The market has evolved.
Competition is higher.
Guests expect more intention.
Design must feel curated.
Experience must feel deliberate.
Facebook Marketplace furniture doesn’t cut it anymore.
Without brand strategy, your rental risks:
The competition isn’t just more saturated.
It’s more strategic.
This episode (and blog) is for you if:
If you’re in acquisition mode, I created a Short-Term Rental Acquisition Checklist outlining every step I followed when acquiring Luna at The Future Micro Resort of Elysian.
Grab that in the show notes.
