What if the sun and the moon could exist on the same property?
In this episode of the Brand and Market Podcast, I’m sharing the next chapter in building a mirror house short-term rental experience at Elysian — our five-acre property in Fancy Gap, Virginia. From guest experience and branding to logistics and site planning, this episode is a real behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to intentionally expand a unique stay property.
Elysian is the property my husband and I purchased in November 2025 in the mountains of Virginia near the North Carolina state line.
The property sits on about five acres in Fancy Gap, Virginia and currently includes one rental unit: Luna.
Luna is a quirky geodesic concrete dome that is around 1,600 square feet with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a loft. The property also includes several outdoor amenities including a hardscaped fire pit, a stargazing dome, a grilling pavilion, and a cozy reading hollow.
Luna was intentionally designed with families in mind. With bunk beds, family-friendly spaces, and room for up to six guests, the guest experience is centered around connection, memory-making, and a peaceful mountain escape.
But from the beginning, the vision for Elysian was always to eventually add more unique stays to the property.
You can also read more about the original vision for Luna and Elysian in my previous blog posts by clicking here.
The next potential unit at Elysian is an OOD Mirror House.
I’ve loved these mirror house structures for a long time, but I needed the right property to place one on. Now, with Elysian, it finally feels like there’s a natural next step.
The current idea is to call the mirror house Sol, meaning sun.
That name would beautifully complement Luna, the moon-inspired dome already on the property. Together, Luna and Sol would begin to create a larger brand experience under the Elysian name.
Where Luna is cool-toned, family-friendly, and moon-inspired, Sol would be warm, rich, romantic, and designed as a couple’s retreat.
The goal wouldn’t just be to add another unit. The goal would be to create a completely different experience on the same property, giving guests a reason to return and “collect” different stays at Elysian.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned through this process is that multiple units on one property should not all feel the same.
Luna is designed for families.
Sol would be designed for couples.
That difference matters because strong hospitality brands think beyond beds and bathrooms. They think about who the guest is, what they want to feel, and why they would choose this stay over another option.
For Elysian, the bigger brand vision is heavenly, peaceful, and out of this world. The property is meant to feel like an escape from everyday life.
Adding this mirror house short-term rental would allow that same brand identity to expand while still offering a completely separate guest experience.
A mirror house creates a very specific type of guest experience because of the way it reflects the natural surroundings.
During the day, the house reflects the trees, creek, and landscape around it, almost camouflaging itself into the property. From the inside, guests would be surrounded by views of the forest.
I envision placing Sol near a creek on the property where guests could wake up, roll out of bed, and look directly at the water trickling by.
For a couple’s retreat, that kind of setting could create an incredibly peaceful, intimate, and memorable experience.
Earlier this year, I visited the OOD Mirror House warehouse in Houston during an open house event.
The event gave me the chance to tour different mirror house models, ask questions, and hear from professionals with experience in micro resorts, zoning, site planning, feasibility studies, and hospitality development.
One of the biggest takeaways from the visit was being able to walk through the different units in person.
Originally, I thought the standard unit might work for Elysian, but after experiencing the layouts firsthand, I decided the extended version felt like a much better fit. Even though the difference in square footage wasn’t huge, the additional space made the unit feel significantly more comfortable for guests.
While the vision for Sol is exciting, this episode also pulls back the curtain on the less glamorous side of developing a unique stay.
There are real logistics to consider, including:
The mirror house itself may be financially feasible, but the full project includes much more than the purchase price.
That’s an important reminder for short-term rental investors: the structure is only one piece of the total investment.
This episode is a real behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to grow a unique stay concept intentionally.
The biggest lesson is that every decision should connect back to the brand, the guest experience, and the long-term vision for the property.
Before adding a new unit, owners should ask:
For Elysian, Sol wouldn’t just be another rental. It would be another chapter in the story.
Elysian is still evolving, but the bigger vision is becoming clearer.
Luna may be the first unit, but Sol could be the next step toward creating a full branded hospitality experience. By thinking through architecture, naming, guest avatars, design direction, and logistics, I’m trying to build something that feels intentional from every angle.
Whether you’re building a micro resort, adding a second unit, or simply dreaming about what your property could become, I hope this episode reminds you that the best hospitality brands are built with intention.
They don’t just add more.
They add meaning.
