Let's whip that brand into shape!

Branding doesn’t end when your logo is finalized or your website goes live.
In fact, some of the most important branding work happens after those pieces are complete.
When I work with short-term rental owners, one of the biggest challenges I see is knowing how to take a brand strategy and actually bring it to life. You may have your logo, your colors, your fonts, and your website, but then what?
That’s where brand activations come in.
In this episode of the Brand & Market Podcast, I’m sharing how to create intentional guest experiences that help guests feel your brand instead of simply seeing it. Whether you own a short-term rental, boutique hotel, micro resort, or hospitality-focused personal brand, these strategies can help you create experiences that leave a lasting impression and keep guests coming back.

A brand activation is a repeatable experience, touchpoint, or interaction that helps guests feel your brand rather than simply see it.
Think about some of the world’s most recognizable brands:
These experiences create emotional connections and make the brand memorable.
The same principle applies to hospitality.
Brand activations for short-term rentals help guests connect emotionally with your property and create experiences they’ll remember long after checkout.
However, many hosts stop at visual branding.
They create a logo, choose brand colors, design a website, and decorate the property.
Those elements matter, but they are only part of the story.
A logo alone is not your brand. Likewise, a website doesn’t define your brand, and neither do your amenities.
Instead, your brand comes to life through the experiences guests have during their stay and the emotions they associate with those moments.
Additionally, before implementing activations, it’s important to establish a strong brand foundation through your guest avatar, messaging, and overall positioning strategy.
One of my favorite examples comes from Acadia Evergreen Retreat, a property located near Acadia National Park in Maine.
The goal of the brand is to help guests feel immersed in the natural beauty of the area from the moment they arrive.
For example, one simple activation was placing an evergreen-scented diffuser near the entrance.
Meanwhile, guests arrive surrounded by pine trees, see the property’s branding, and immediately experience that same feeling through scent when they walk inside.
The result is a stronger emotional connection to the property and a more immersive stay.
Another example is Homestead at Cunningham Creek, a farm stay built around nostalgia, family connection, and creating lasting memories.
Additionally, each guest receives a dozen farm-fresh eggs from the chickens on the property.
For many visitors coming from urban areas, this simple gift becomes one of the most memorable parts of their stay.
It’s not just a welcome gift—it’s a brand experience that reinforces the property’s story and supports the overall feeling the owners want guests to have.
I also shared the story of Tennessee Together, a couples-focused cabin in Pigeon Forge that intentionally operates without internet access.
Instead of treating that as a weakness, the owners turned it into their greatest differentiator.
Their activations include:
Every touchpoint supports the property’s mission of helping couples reconnect.

Properties with shared spaces have unique opportunities to create community-focused experiences.
For instance, one example I highlighted comes from Bolt Farm Treehouse.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a glass of champagne.
This simple gesture helps guests transition from the stress of travel into a mindset of relaxation, celebration, and connection.
As a result, the experience immediately reinforces the brand’s focus on intentional hospitality.
Another opportunity for boutique hotels and micro resorts is creating activations through shared experiences.
Some examples include:
As a result, these experiences help guests connect not only with the property but also with the surrounding community.
One example I brainstormed while recording this episode was for The Billy Motel in West Virginia. Because their brand centers around a “hillbilly fabulous” identity that celebrates both Appalachian culture and creativity, hosting artist meet-and-greets or live music events could become a natural extension of their brand experience while strengthening connections between guests and the local community.
Brand activations aren’t limited to hospitality businesses.
Instead, personal brands can create activations through recurring content series.
One example I shared on the podcast involves a business owner whose core value is “See the Gap, Focus on the Gain.”
Every Monday, he shares his goals for the week.
On Fridays, he reports on his progress and lessons learned.
Over time, this consistency naturally becomes a recognizable part of his brand and builds trust with his audience.
Similarly, personal brands can create memorable experiences through repetition and consistency, just as hospitality brands do.
Before creating any activation, you need to understand who you’re serving.
Go beyond demographics and ask:
The better you understand your ideal guest, the easier it becomes to create meaningful experiences.
One of the simplest ways I brainstorm brand activations for short-term rentals is by focusing on the five senses.
The more senses involved, the more immersive the experience becomes.
Every activation should answer:
Does this appeal to my ideal guest?
If not, eliminate it.
What feeling do I want this experience to create?
Most importantly, every activation should reinforce a specific emotion that aligns with your brand.
Consistency matters.
After you’ve selected your activations:
As a result, guests should receive the same experience every time they stay.
Creating memorable guest experiences doesn’t have to require a massive budget or elaborate planning.
Whether it’s a signature scent, a locally sourced welcome gift, conversation cards, or a thoughtful check-in experience, these small touches help guests feel connected to your property and your story.
As a result, they often lead to stronger reviews, deeper guest loyalty, and more word-of-mouth referrals.
Furthermore, when implemented consistently, brand activations create stronger emotional connections, better reviews, increased guest satisfaction, and a more memorable hospitality brand.
While your logo supports your brand, it is only one piece of the puzzle. Likewise, your website and property design help shape the guest experience. However, they are rarely what guests remember most.
More often, people remember how your property made them feel.
Ultimately, the experiences guests have—and the emotions they associate with those experiences—are what define your brand.
So here’s your challenge: identify one brand activation you can implement this week that will bring your brand to life and create a more memorable stay for your guests.
