Let's whip that brand into shape!

One of the questions I get asked most often is which direct booking property management system I recommend for hosts who want to build a custom website. While there are a lot of factors that go into choosing the right platform, today I want to look at it through one specific lens: building a custom direct booking website.
If creating a direct booking site is part of your long-term business plan, the PMS you choose now can make a big difference later. I’ve had the opportunity to build custom websites that integrate with several different property management systems, so I’ve seen firsthand what works well and what creates unnecessary headaches.
Let’s talk about what you should consider before making that decision.
If you’re already using a property management system, chances are it includes a built-in direct booking website.
Is it as customizable as a fully branded website? No.
Is it still worth using? Absolutely.
Even if a custom website isn’t in your budget yet, having any direct booking option is a step toward reducing your reliance on Airbnb and VRBO. Most PMS platforms automatically pull in your listing photos, descriptions, availability, and booking functionality, making it incredibly easy to get started.
Spend some time exploring the platform. You may be able to customize colors, adjust branding elements, and become more familiar with how everything works behind the scenes. That experience will make the transition to a custom site much smoother when you’re ready.
When we build direct booking websites for our clients, we use Squarespace as the foundation.
From there, we integrate the booking functionality directly from the property management system using embedded widgets and booking code. This allows us to create a website that feels completely custom while still using your PMS to manage calendars, reservations, and availability.
Instead of working within a template, we can build a site that reflects your brand, from your fonts and colors to your photography and messaging.
The result is a professional website that feels like an extension of your hospitality brand rather than just another booking page.
Another decision you’ll need to make is how you want to structure your website.
For some hosts, it makes sense to create a website dedicated to a single property. Others may want one website that showcases an entire portfolio of vacation rentals under one brand.
Neither option is inherently better.
The right choice depends on your long-term goals, how you plan to grow your business, and even what your exit strategy looks like years from now.
Thinking about those future plans before purchasing your domain name can save you a lot of work down the road.
This is where I’ve noticed the biggest differences.
From a website designer’s perspective, every PMS handles its booking widgets differently. Some create a seamless experience that feels native to the website, while others are much more difficult to customize.
Based solely on website development and user experience, here’s how I currently rank the systems I’ve worked with:
Lodgify is my top recommendation.
Its booking widgets are highly customizable, allowing us to match your branding with colors, fonts, and styling. The final result feels polished and integrated into your website rather than looking like a separate tool embedded on the page.
Hospitable is another strong option.
Like Lodgify, it offers flexibility that allows us to create a cohesive guest experience while maintaining your brand identity throughout the booking process.
Hostaway can absolutely produce a great final product, but it requires considerably more work behind the scenes to make everything feel seamless.
The end result is still strong—it simply takes more development effort to get there.
OwnerRez has been the most difficult platform for creating truly seamless custom websites.
While it certainly functions, the booking experience tends to look more like an embedded third-party tool than a natural part of the website. Some branding elements simply aren’t customizable, making it harder to create the premium experience many hosts are looking for.
If you’re choosing a property management system with the goal of eventually investing in a custom direct booking website, my top recommendations are:
Both provide a smoother integration and allow for a much more polished guest experience.
Now, that’s only one piece of the puzzle.
When it comes to the day-to-day operations of running a short-term rental business, I personally use Lodgify and have had an excellent experience with it. It handles reservations, guest messaging, automations, and direct bookings while giving me the flexibility I need as both a host and a business owner.
Your property management system isn’t just software. It’s the foundation of your business operations.
Choosing one that supports your future goals can save you time, money, and frustration when you’re ready to invest in a custom direct booking website.
If direct bookings are part of your long-term strategy, don’t just evaluate a PMS based on today’s needs. Think about where you want your business to be in five or ten years, and choose a platform that can grow with you.
Building a brand isn’t about making decisions for where you are today, it’s about making decisions that support where you’re going.
