Let me set the scene for you:

It’s 7pm. You just finished eating dinner and slouch into the couch after a long day, ready to watch some How to Get Away with Murder and mindlessly scroll through Instagram. Then you realize…you haven’t posted on your business Instagram today…or all week…and it’s looming over your head that your audience and reach are going to diminish. So you quickly find a picture on your phone from a recent shoot and write a short, disengaging caption about the beautiful weather that day.

Have you been there before? I know I have. Which is why I have done my best to overcome that overwhelm that can so easily creep in. Here are a few tips that I use on a regular basis:

1. Give yourself some grace.It’s only social media. Real life happens and that’s okay.
2. Batch write your content. Writing a ton of content in one sitting is so much easier than the draining brain dump it takes to write individual captions each.and.every.day. Plus, batch writing allows you to create cohesive themes throughout your captions and create a beautifully consistent feed when you use apps like Planoly that allow you to see what your feed will look like before you post it.
3. Choose ONE social media platform.If you’re overwhelmed by juggling Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and also, you know, your real life that’s not online…then stop juggling. Choose one social media platform to really put your all into. Think of your ideal client…where does that person spend most of their social media time? Are you targeting newly engaged couples or tired moms? Those are different audiences in different seasons of life that tend to show up in different places, so define your ideal client, then find their online home and market there, not everywhere.

These may seem like simple pointers, but as Michael Scott says it: “KISS…Keep It Simple Stupid.” Applying these three principles when you’re experiencing social media overwhelm will help you narrow your focus and pinpoint your efforts to your ideal client only, rather than everyone on social media.
