Even though Hannah is a Cavalier…I still like her! That sounds harsh–I am only kidding! The deep rivalry between UVA and Virginia Tech withered in our presence. Instead, it was like we had found old friends! It didn’t hurt that her mom and sister were both Hokies and would gladly take my side, I’m sure!?

I met Hannah and Seth at a bridal show back in January (it was on my birthday actually!). Hannah has an air of class and grace that follows her wherever she goes. With a classic style and calm demeanor, I knew that Seth would likely follow–and he did!

When we met for this first time at their engagement session, he was such a considerate gentleman, always offering a hand behind Hannah’s back as she climbed the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial and patiently waited as I switched lenses or my [very pregnant] self took a little longer to get from point A to point B.

They wanted the quintessential Washington, D.C. engagement portraits…so where else to go but the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, and World War Memorial?! So that’s exactly what we did!

When I arrived a little early, as I do for all of my sessions, I was greeted with lots of sound equipment and scaffolding standing between the Reflecting Pool and the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Little did I know, this was the beginning of the setup of the March on Washington, slated to happen the following day. My stomach sank for a second–I thought there was no way I could shoot around the equipment and still deliver quality images of this sweet couple in these literally monumental areas.

Alas, we made it happen with some very strategic maneuvering and “body blocking.” My clients would be surprised how often I use the body block trick! See a bright orange road sign or ugly trashcan in the background of the scene where we are shooting? Chances are, I am using your body to block it right out, so it won’t take away from the scenery!

It was a joy to learn more about Hannah and Seth and the interesting jobs that brought them to the Capitol and has them feeling right at home. Their wedding next year is guaranteed to be classic and timeless!
