You know…I never thought I would be a “cake smash mom.” Nothing is wrong with being a cake smash mom, but it seemed a little extra to me…before Huxley was born. Then her first birthday began approaching and I was like…that could be kinda fun! And babies and cake…how could anything go wrong?!

Our daughter is one of the most easiest-going humans I’ve ever met. Sure, she has her moments—she’s a baby. But those moments are few and far between. So I just knew I had the perfect baby for a cake smash. I assembled all the things—her reading teepee, a blanket, books to stack her cake on, the beautiful “H” monogram her aunt handmade her, the perfect pink outfit and bow, and finally, the stunning smash cake with intricate details and a handmade sugar flower poppy. Not extra at all, right?

I thought, “She enjoys getting her hands dirty outside and has no issue with food at the table.”

…so a cake smash should be a piece of cake, right? Wrong.

She was NOT a fan of smashing pretty, tasty things! Apparently our baby and cake do not mix well!

These pictures may make it seem like it was a joyful experience, but they were all taken in about two minutes before we tried to get her to smash the cake. Once smashing began, all of the pictures look like the last two, where her dad was trying to show her what to do and she was screaming and crying because she knew what to do, but didn’t want to do it.

One of the main things Huxley has taught me: Be okay with things not going as planned. So we packed up the teepee, monogram H, books, blanket, baby, and remainder of cake, and headed home approximately 10 minutes after we arrived.

Alas, I still had a delicious cake made by Sally (The Cake Bee) to drown my sorrows in.
